First time mum, quick birth in hospital

Hayley shares the quick labour and birth story of her first baby, born in hospital.

“POSITIVE HOSPITAL BIRTH STORY

FIRST TIME MUM

EDD- 27/09/21

BIRTH DATE- 25/09/21

Weight- 8lb7oz (3.850kg)

I went up to bed around 9:30pm on 24/09/21 as I had some lower back ache and wanted to go get comfortable. It went and I thought nothing of it. It came back so I changed position, but it didn't go this time so I tried another position and that didn't help. Eventually it subsided and I tried to sleep but it came back and this time I found myself UP breathing and pacing around the room.

After another 15 minutes of this my partner came up to see what was going on and we realised it was my contractions. They were all in my back throughout my labour so I never had the feeling of my stomach tightening like I was expecting.

They were coming strong and fast. I think they were about 5ish minutes apart and lasting about minute by 10:30.

11pm we phoned the delivery suite as I was no longer able to talk or walk through them and they were every 2 minutes but because I was a FTM and they hadn't been happening for 2 hours it was suggested I run a bath and take a couple of paracetamol as they'll only send me home if I'm not in active labour. I had a couple of paracetamol and my partner started to run the bath but I was on the toilet with every contraction at this point and by 11:30 he phoned them back to say I was coming in as I was sitting on the toilet gently pushing.

My partner got everything in the car, phoned his Mum and the 3 of us set off for the hospital. His Mum parked the car I waddled in with my partner dashing ahead. We arrived at 00:05 and I was shown to my room and introduced to my midwife. She left the room and my partner went to get the bags and at 00:10 my waters broke, like in the films they gushed out onto the floor and into my boots I'm still wearing. My midwife asked for a urine sample but a contraction came and I had the urge to push so she helped me get up on the bed instead then pottered around getting everything ready.

I did some gentle pushes whenever I had a contraction whilst she was getting set up. At 00:33 she checked my cervix only to utter "Oh, I can feel the baby's head" instantly and then it was really go time. With only 10 pushes he was out and in my arms.

Arthur Trent was born at 00:57 weighing 8lb 7oz. I had a 2nd degree tear top and bottom so after my placenta had been delivered at 01:08 (I had the injection to help speed that part up) the doctor came in and stitched me up as it was on the verge of being a third the midwife wanted a doctor to come check. Thank goodness for gas and air because that wasn't pleasant but my midwife was an amazing support throughout it all.

She took great care of me and my partner who at this point was looking a little pale and had to remove his mask and stand by the window to get some fresh air.”
