Why take responsibility for your birth?

WHY is it so important that we use pregnancy to get informed; to take responsibility for and control of our decisions (regardless of how things actually play out or what those decisions are)?

Well, because your pregnancy sets the scene for the rest of your parenting journey.

Understanding and making choices that may benefit your baby or your family extend from pregnancy and birth into your approach to childcare, schooling, discipline, sleep, screen time, feeding, work life balance, boundaries, rituals, celebrations, shopping habits, politics, family values- essentially everything that you have influence over as a parent.

If we’ve spent our lives conditioned to ‘do as we are told’, to ‘trust the experts’ and ‘follow the rules’, we relinquish both our control and responsibility over how our and our children’s lives unfold. (And we demonstrate to our children that critical thinking, the ability and right to ask questions or the possibility of making mistakes aren’t values worth nurturing).

But it IS our responsibility to make choices in the best interests of our child.

It doesn’t MATTER if we look back and decide we might have made a different decision, we at least MADE the decision.

Closing our eyes, covering our ears, disengaging and blindly doing what we are told is ALSO a decision. Usually the easiest one, but not necessarily the one with the best outcomes on an individual level. So whilst questioning, challenging, taking our time and maybe doing things differently FEELS scary a lot of the time, if we pull it back to WHY we are doing it (because we feel it is in the best interest of ourselves/children/family) it suddenly feels much more worthwhile.

It’s never too late to switch your approach on this. Whether you’re just pregnant, due tomorrow, have teenagers or grown up kids! We are still allowed to make mistakes and things will happen every day of our lives that are beyond our control, but take responsibility for the decisions you are making.

All of them.

Even if every single one follows the status quo.

At least it’s because you chose it so.

It’s pretty scary making the decision to take responsibility, we are here to hold your hand through it all! Join our online course for just £40/$49 for all the info you need!
